- Axar won the Man of the Match award for his spell of 2/18 vs RCB
Delhi Capitals captain Shreyas Iyer was in the mood to crack some jokes as he led his side to a table-topping win over Royal Challengers in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 meeting on Monday in Dubai. Playing the translator’s role for Man of the Match Axar Patel, Iyer was at his jovial best.
Shreyas Iyer jokingly took the credit, saying Axar Patel ‘wants to thank his captain’ when the young left-arm spinner didn’t say so at the post-match press conference.
“Also, he said thanks to the captain,” Iyer said as Axar and presenter Pommie Mbangwa burst into laughter. Mbangwa asked if Axar had really said so to which the left-arm spinner nodded, saying no. Axar though said he thanked his captain after the 59-run win in Dubai.
Axar was given an opportunity to return to the side as he replaced injured Amit Mishra who was ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2020 with a finger injury. The left-arm spinner was at his best as he gave away just 18 runs in his 4-over spell and picked up the crucial wickets of Aaron Finch and Moeen Ali.
Defending 197, Axar gave Delhi a perfect start as he mixed caution with aggression in the powerplay to trouble the RCB top-order. He kept Virat Kohli quiet while operating in the first 6 overs as the opposition skipper didn’t keep up with the asking rate
Axar said he was mentally prepared that he would bowl in the powerplay and that he started attacking after seeing the ball grip and turn as early as his first over.
“I knew it was stopping on the wicket. I knew I would bowl in the powerplay and I had practised for it as well. I think I executed my plans really well. I wanted to bowl at the stumps and vary the pace. In the powerplay I was in a mood to defend at first, but when the third ball spun I changed gears and got into an attack mode,” Axar said.
Iyer elated with DC’s table-topping show
Delhi Capitals stormed to the top of the points table after their biggest win over RCB in the history of the league. Iyer’s men have now beaten RCB in their last 3 meetings and the skipper is delighted with the way things have been progressing at IPL 2020.
“Getting four out of five, I will take that any day. Kudos to the boys and the temperament shown in pressure situations.
“Our strategy was to be fearless and play with full freedom. We have got good youngsters in our side, so we just need to go out and execute our talent and skills. I am very happy with the way things are going so far, and we need to keep up the momentum,” Iyer said.
