Team India on Friday announced the squad for the Boxing Day Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, and talented batsman Shubman Gill is set to make his debut.

Former India opener Gautam Gambhir hopes that the team management will give the youngster a good and long opportunity to prove himself. He hoped that the management will show trust in the batsman’s abilities and have not just picked him up on hope.

“Only time will tell if Shubman Gill will be successful as an opening batsman. But getting an opportunity making your debut in a Boxing Day Test in Australia, it can’t get much bigger than that.

“But again I expect the team management not to pick him on hope. Pick him on trust. Because if you pick somebody on trust you end up giving him a longer opportunity or a longer run. When you pick someone on hope, you are only expecting I hope he does well,” Gautam Gambhir said on Sports Today Youtube.

Gambhir also said that it would be unfair on the youngster if he is to be dropped from the playing XI when star batsman Rohit Sharma makes a return to the team.

“So, if you pick Shubman Gill I am sure they will be thinking about showing that trust in him. Even if Rohit Sharma comes back, they have got to push him somewhere in that batting order.

“It will be very unfair on Shubman Gill if he opens batting and gets to a 20-30 and then suddenly Rohit Sharma comes back and Gill finds himself outside the playing XI.

“That’s not going to be fair on him. If you decide to pick Shubman Gill, pick him on trust and believe in him and probably give him a longer run like what Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma got under MS Dhoni,” Gambhir added.

Four changes made by India for Boxing Day Test

Team India on Friday announced the squad for the Boxing Day Test and four changes have been made from the team that played the pink-ball Test in Adelaide last week.

The 21-year-old Gill replaces Prithvi Shaw who, with scores of 0 and 4 in the Pink Ball Test, failed to keep his place in the playing XI. Mohammed Siraj, will also make his India debut on Saturday and will replace the injured Mohammed Shami.

Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant earned a call back to the team and will replace Virat Kohli and Wriddhiman Saha, respectively.
