India’s largest hockey stadium is being planned in the city of Rourkela in Odisha, as announced on Thursday, and will host Men’s World Cup 2023 fixture.

On Thursday, December 24, Odisha’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced that the city of Rourkela will be the venue for India’s largest hockey stadium. The upcoming stadium will have a capacity of 20,000 and will also host the 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup.
The planned stadium will be covering an area of 15 acres, to be put up in the Biju Patnaik University of Technology campus that is owned by the government of Odisha.
Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, on Thursday, announced this news via a video message.
“As we have announced earlier, Odisha will once again be the proud host of the prestigious men’s hockey World Cup in 2023,” Patnaik said.
The 2023 World Cup fixtures will be hosted by Bhubaneswar (Kalinga Stadium) which is Odisha’s capital city and as well as in Rourkela. Indian hockey legends such as former captain Dilip Tirkey and Sunita Lakra belong to the Sundargarh district of which Rourkela is a part.
“As a tribute to the contribution of Sundargarh to Indian hockey, I would like to announce that we will build a new international level stadium in Rourkela with a seating capacity of 20,000. The stadium will have all the modern amenities and will offer a unique experience. I hope it will emerge as the best venue for field hockey in the World,” the CM added.
To examine the infrastructure and the tied facilities of the upcoming stadium, a high-level team including senior officials from the state government, International Federation of Hockey (FIH), Department of Sports and Youth Services and Hockey India had visited Rourkela recently.
According to PTI, the work on the construction of the Rourkela hockey stadium as already begun and will take up 17 blocks of Sundargarh district.
