MS Dhoni won the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test in 2011. Dhoni’s gesture won him the Spirit of the Cricket award in 2011 and now it has been established as one of the most heartening gestures on the field in the last 10 years.

MS Dhoni has been named as the skipper of the ICC ODI Team of the Decade. MS Dhoni was earlier also named the skipper of the ICC T20I Team of the Decade. “MS DHONI wins the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade. The former India captain was chosen by fans unanimously for his gesture of calling back England batsman Ian Bell after a bizarre run out in the Nottingham Test in 2011,” ICC tweeted.

Notably, MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from international cricket in August this year. Dhoni is regarded by many cricket experts as one of the best captains and wicketkeepers in the history of Indian cricket. Till last year Dhoni was a regular feature in the Indian One-Day International cricket team.

Dhoni was the only skipper to win all three major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies – the World Cup, the World Twenty20, and the Champions Trophy. MS Dhoni had retired from Test cricket in 2014 in the middle of a Test series against Australia. In 2017, he decided to step down from limited-overs captaincy after which Virat Kohli took over as captain.

The ICC Awards of The Decade recognizes the best players across Cricket over the past 10 years, invited fans to vote for the first time by selecting the winners across categories including the Sir Garfield Sobers and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Awards, which celebrate the best overall player from the men’s and women’s game over the past decade. Fans provided 100% of the vote for the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award of the Decade, from a list of the past winners since 2011. More than 1.5 million fans from across the globe participated casting 5.3 million votes.
