India captain Ajinkya Rahane has said the team is excited to welcome Rohit Sharma into the set-up in the lead up to the 3rd Test against Australia, scheduled to start from January 7 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Ajinkya Rahane led India to “one of the greatest comeback wins” as the visitors crushed Australia by 8 wickets in the Boxing Day Test on Tuesday. India put behind the horrors of 36-all out in Adelaide to successfully bounce back and level the series 1-1.
India were without Rohit who has been in quarantine in Sydney following recovery from a hamstring injury he picked up during the Indian Premier League. Rohit cleared the fitness test at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru earlier this month and landed in Australia well ahead of the 2nd Test. However, he was not able to join the rest of the squad due to hard quarantine rules Down Under.
Rohit Sharma is likely to complete his quarantine period on Tuesday following which he will be allowed to train with the rest of the squad in Melbourne. With 8 more days to go for the 3rd Test, Rohit may have the adequate time to get back into groove and be back in competition for the opener’s role.
India opened with Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill in Boxing Day Test. While the debutant shone with two gritty knocks, Mayank was struggling to put bat to ball. With Prithvi Shaw not impressing in the Adelaide Test, Rohit is likely to return to the XI if he is deemed fit.
“We’re excited about Rohit coming back. Spoke to him yesterday, he’s waiting to join the team,” Rahane said.

Ravi Shastri hints India will wait and watch
Meanwhile, India head coach Ravi Shastri, speaking to the press after India’s memorable win, said India will have a good look at Rohit with regards to his fitness and form after the long quarantine before taking a call on his inclusion.
“We’ll see how Rohit is physically, he’s coming after a long quarantine. We have to check how he feels before we take a call,” Shashtri said.
On the other hand, former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar, speaking to Sony Sports, said India should look at having Gill in the middle order while pairing Rohit with Mayank Agarwal despite the latter’s poor returns so far. Gavaskar said he would drop Hanuma Vihari from the XI for the 3rd Test.
